Όμως το πρόβλημα δεν είναι μόνο τοπικό: καθώς το παγωμένο έδαφος λιώνει, απελευθερώνει τεράστιες ποσότητες διοξειδίου του άνθρακα και μεθανίου — αέρια που επιταχύνουν δραματικά την υπερθέρμανση του πλανήτη. Την ίδια στιγμή, οι δεσμεύσεις των ηγετών για την κλιματική κρίση ξεθωριάζουν, χαμένες σε πολέμους και οικονομικές πιέσεις. Η «ενεργειακή ασφάλεια» έχει γίνει νέα προτεραιότητα, ενώ γεωτρήσεις επεκτείνονται σε ολόκληρη την Αρκτική. On opposite sides of the Bering Strait, Nikita in Eastern Siberia and Martha in Northern Alaska watch their worlds crumble. The permafrost — ground frozen for millennia, sealing within it the era of the mammoths — is now thawing at an unprecedented rate, swallowing homes, infrastructure, settlements, and entire cities. But the crisis is not local: as the frozen ground thaws, it releases vast quantities of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, dramatically accelerating global warming. Meanwhile, world leaders' commitments on climate are fading, lost amidst wars and economic pressures. "Energy security" has become the new priority, and drilling across the Arctic is expanding faster than ever.
