Η ταινία, που συγκλόνισε την Ιταλία με πάνω από 5 εκατομμύρια εισιτήρια, διαδραματίζεται στη μεταπολεμική Ρώμη και αφηγείται την ιστορία μιας γυναίκας που μεγαλώνει μόνη τα παιδιά της υπό το βάρος της βίας και της καταπίεσης.
